Process of Writing: Marianna Trench

Marianna Trench is what I used to refer to my project as sometimes. I haven’t much lately, but for this process of writing I’m focusing on one scene I’ve recently worked on. I used to do a set of “versus” demo scenes, and I’ve started coming back to that. It helps me develop characters. So whether this scene is the same when I’m done or completely different it helps me get things moving in the right direction. I think I also mentioned that I threw a rough cut of this scene together. I’ll be sharing  that on Random Mondays. But for now, I’ll share the written part of the scene.

PAUL

Just go. Run!

RACHAEL
Okay, alright!

(Rachael runs and just in time; as Paul finds himself in Caluvaar’s lair where his father was earlier. The transfer causes him to vomit.)

CALUVAAR
It’s only a matter of time, you know.

PAUL
(coughs) I was wondering when you would summon me.

CALUVAAR
You’re getting weak. Your old man didn’t even blink.

PAUL
I recover quickly.

CALUVAAR
Yes, there is that. (Hands him a glass) Water?

PAUL
Sure, thanks. (gulps it down)
CALUVAAR
Cheers. (raises a glass of his own and takes a long swig)

PAUL
So I’m guessing this is what you were working towards back on the island.

CALUVAAR
What I experimented with on Calamar was only the beginning. This is only the first step of that vision.

PAUL
Well I’d congratulate you, but… (let’s the sentence go unfinished with weighted silence)

CALUVAAR
Well I haven’t done it yet.

PAUL
It?

CALUVAAR
The ultimate.

PAUL
Oh that… How long have you been developing the best way to kill someone?

CALUVAAR
That’s just it! Marianna doesn’t have to die for the ultimate to be achieved!

PAUL
Wait, what?

CALUVAAR
You do.

PAUL
Oh.

CALUVAAR
Yes. You have a habit of getting in my way…and that is a habit I cannot tolerate.
(Paul begins to bring up fluids)

CALUVAAR
Feeling a bit strange? (rhetorical)

(Paul tries to reply but gags instead)

CALUVAAR (CONT’D)
The venom of the black Viper–very effective.

PAUL
I knew the water tasted funny. (raspy)

CALUVAAR
Then why did you drink it? Hm? Are you relying on that ancient promise that no poison you drink will affect you, and that you will die an old man?

(Paul drops to his knees)

PAUL
Half of that is from the Book, the other half from a novel wish. (coughs) Personally I only believe in the first.

CALUVAAR
Look where it got you. (comes down to Paul’s level) The point is the ultimate will be achieved whether Marianna dies, or lives out her days as a useless shell humanity. And you were the one to… (Paul collapses and lies still) Damn.

(Caluvaar stands up.)

CALUVAAR
Go get my duchess, boys. The cat is in the bag.
